Old World Wines was founded by Bret A. Hammett, a petroleum geologist in Houston, Texas with over thirty years of experience in the oil and gas business. It is the understanding of geology, along with a wine epiphany, that inspired him to develop a keen interest in wine at a young age. Bret’s wine epiphany occurred in 1985, when at the Hotel de Paris in Monte Carlo, he and a friend had a bottle of 1971 Chateau Latour that changed his life and inspired his eternal quest for good wine. Bret views the understanding of geology as a key component to the understanding of terroir and winemaking throughout the world, but in particular in France. His palate has been shaped and influenced by more than thirty three years of collecting Bordeaux and Burgundy wines and countless winery visits and tastings all over the world.
